In 1809, Dhaulagiri was measured and found to be 8194m tall. It reigned as the tallest mountain in the world till 1848 when Kanchenjunga was measured. Forty kilometres long and encompassing no fewer than fifteen 7000m+ peaks, the Dhaulagiri massif is one of the tallest and biggest mountain systems in the world.
Long closed to visitors for a number of reasons (including its remoteness), the region west and north of Dhaulagiri was first opened to trekkers travelling in organised groups, in 1990. This made it possible for trekkers to go behind, north of the Dhaulagiri massif to explore remote villages and even more remote valleys, which up till then had been the sole domain of serious mountaineers and explorers. Muri is the last major settlement on this trail and is inhabited by people of the Magar tribe, descended from the early settlers of the Nepalese middle hills.
From Muri, head along the Myagdi Khola through the villages of Baghara, Dobang and Chartare to Pakoban. Beyond Pakoban there are no permanent settlements. You skirt the Chhanbardan Glacier to reach the Dhaulagiri Base Camp from where magnificent mountain vistas are viewed. From Base Camp, climb the steep incline to the French Pass (5360m) between Tukche Peak (6920m) and Sita Chuchura (6611m). Pass through a portion of the Hidden Valley and climb to Thapa Pass (5250m) between Tukche Peak and Thapa Peak (6012m) from where you begin your descent to Alubari. From Alubari, descend to the village of Marpha on the banks of the Kali Gandaki River, and then head north to Jomsom from where you fly back to Kathmandu via Pokhara.

Suitable for...
Seasoned mountain walkers with some experience of high altitude. This is a long and strenuous trek but the crossing of high passes does not require much technical ability. You must be in good physical condition and be capable of trekking for up to 5 to 7 hours a day over 'not easy' terrain for several days. The altitude and weather are also to be considered; at high altitudes the ambient oxygen level is down to approximately 50%.
