The Grossglockner is a classic and accordingly popular peak. Its sharp pyramidal shaped peak actually consists of two pinnacles, the Grossglockner and the Kleinglockner (3770m), separated by a saddle-like formation known as the Glocknerscharte.

It draws climbers from near and far and its dramatic summit can be seen from nearly all of its approach routes. However, although it is a serious and impressive mountain, its standard route is not as difficult as Mont Blanc or Dufourspitze and, unlike both those mountains, it is a more feasible step up for the experienced UK hill walker prior to contemplating a Mont Blanc attempt.

Activity Information

At 3798m above sea level the Grossglockner is Austria's highest mountain and the highest peak in the Alps east of the Brenner Pass. This makes it, after Mont Blanc, the second most prominent mountain in the Alps, when measured by relative height; see the list of Alpine peaks by prominence.

The Grossglockner lies on the border between Carinthia and the East Tyrol; it is the highest peak in the Glockner group, a group of mountains along the main ridge of the Hohe Tauern. The summit itself lies on the Glockner ridge, which branches to the south off the main ridge.

Itinerary

Day 1

Franz-Josephs Hohe - Oberwalder Hütte
Walking time: 2.5 hours / Ascent: 500m
From Salzburg we drive via the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse to the Franz-Josephs Hohe. This alpine road winds up over the Hoctor, a 2500m high col on the main divide of the Austrian Alps. From the car parking at 2400m we start off to the Oberwalder Hütte at 2900m.

Day 2

Oberwalder Hütte - Johannisberg traverse - Hohe Riffl - Oberwalder Hütte
Walking time: 6 hours / Ascent: 700m / Descent: 700m
The second day is for acclimatisation. We start off from the hut, heading towards the Johannisberg, 3463m. The ascent is via the west ridge, descent on the north ridge. If there is enough time, the Hohe Riffl, 3346m, is an other peak on the way, before we go back to the Oberwalder Hütte again. We spend all day on glaciers and snow ridges.

Day 3

Oberwalder Hütte - Eiskögele - Schneewinkelkopf - Stüdlhütte
Walking time: 8 hours / Ascent: 800m / Descent: 900m
The Eiskögele, 3436m, is the northern most point of the ridge, coming down from the Grossglockner. We follow the snow and rock ridge (Grade II+) to the Teufelskamp. From there we descend to the Stüdl Hütte, crossing an easy glacier.

Day 4

Stüdl Hütte - Stüdl Ridge - Grossglockner - Adlersruhe
Walking time: 7 hours / Ascent: 1000m / Descent: 350m
Our summit day. Early in the morning we start from the Stüdl Hütte. First over glacier, then onto the rocks of the Stüdl Ridge (up to Grade III+). In the late morning we get to the top of the Grossglockner and enjoy the views of the Dolomites in the south and the Bohemian Forest in the north (weather permitting). Descend over the Kleinglockner to the Adlersruhe, the highest hut in the Eastern Alps.

Day 5

Adlersruhe - Franz-Josephs Höhe - Salzburg
Walking time: 5 hours / Ascent: 350m / Descent: 1200m
From the Adlersruhe at 3438m we make our way down to the Pasterze glacier, Austria's longest. Around noon we get back to our car at the Franz-Josephs Höhe. It is a 2 hour drive back to Salzburg. Stay over night in a bed and breakfast in the city.

Day 6

After breakfast you will depart Austria and fly back to UK.
