Mountain Scrambles

A cross between hill walking and rock climbing...

Mountain scrambling falls between hill walking and full on rock climbing and scrambles are often the most exciting and interesting way to ascend or descend a mountain. Scrambling involves climbing steep and exposed mountain ridges with minimal protection from the elements. A good head for heights is essential, as is the ability to move confidently on exposed but technically straight forward terrain.

Scrambles are graded on a scale from 1 to 3:

Grade 1 involves steep and often exposed ground; unlikely to need a rope but good route choice and navigation are important.
Grade 2 requires the use of a rope and some elementary rock climbing skills to negotiate steeper sections of gulley and ridges.
Grade 3 requires good route planning and navigation skills.  The ground can be steep with precipitous edges so we use rope and rock climbing gear for added safety.
